Discover

A homepage that misses the mark

“Our site fails to showcase us as a leading source for stock data and investment strategy.”

— Executive Stakeholder

Defining the Problem

IBD’s homepage struggled with a crowded navigation, unorganized content and lack of visual hierarchy, which made it difficult for users to easily scan the page. There wasn’t a clear separation and differentiation between IBD content, promotional material, and advertisements. Overall, it missed the mark in showcasing IBD as a leading source for stock data and investment strategy.

Research & Planning

Gaining insight & empathy

Initial research was conducted on similar database websites to gain empathy for users and understand what type of structure, layout, and functionality is typical of that type of site. We wanted to identify what worked and what didn’t in order to design a better experience.

Database Analysis

We identified key elements where we could improve upon the design and functionality of a database style website.

Site Map

We simplified the site's initial structure by combining similar information onto single pages and  renamed menu items to make the navigation more intuitive.

Wireframes

We knew from our research that the survey overview and individual survey pages were where drop off could occur. We explored a variety of layouts for those two pages in wireframes to determine which type of layout would create an easy and engaging user experience.

Competitive Analysis

A competitive analysis was conducted to identify competitor's strengths and weaknesses. This helped inform missed opportunities and potential areas of improvement that could be implemented.

Define

Identifying key workflows to prioritize content

We defined what content was most important to IBD users and what they expect on the homepage by identifying key workflows. These discoveries highlighted key pain points on the current site and provided good insights from both current and new users.

User Persona

Our persona created empathy and provided an understanding of the expectations, concerns, and motivations of target users.

Jounery Map

A journey map helped visualize different opportunities for improving the end-to-end experience from a user-centered point of view.

Information Architecture

Data collected from the IA revealed popular content and highly trafficked sections, which helped prioritize the content that mattered most to users.

Information Design

For the infograph design, we decided to opt for a style that was minimal yet colorful. Oversized numbers were added to make the graphic quickly scannable.

Ideate

Prioritizing the content that matters

We could now begin ideating on a compelling experience for the investor community by maintaining careful consideration of end user preferences and putting an emphasis on the quality of content that would be displayed.

Sketches & Wireframes

Rough sketches were drawn during whiteboarding sessions, which later turned into initial wires for a proof of concept.

Navigation

The sites original navigation was very dense and insights from the IA study helped us restructure the primary navigation. We utilized quick links for popular content, streamlined the core menu items, and shifted the proprietary tools.

Content & Layout

User feedback informed what content we would prioritize on the homepage. Important features like the market daily brief and stock trends were displayed at the top for quick discoverability.

Solution

Making it easy to scan, digest and navigate.

Our proposed solution maintains a strong visual hierarchy, keeping content well organized so that it becomes conducive to quick scanning and navigating. It immediately lets users know what their primary focus is by the content displayed above the fold.

Homepage

Users can quickly access the most recent stock market news and updates. They can see the top-performing and worst-performing stocks, relevant news stories, educational videos, and analyst opinions on market activity.

Site Interactions

In addition to the homepage, we also redesigned core interactions like the navigation menu and search experience.

Outcome & Lessons

Reflect your brand values and expertise

The homepage is the face of your online brand and should not only reflect your value and expertise, but display that you know your audience as well. As such, it is best to surface the content, tools and links that your users need most. The design of the site should offer an experience that users want to interact with and trust.
